Jeremiah 14 - Covenant Keeping is a Two-Way Street

LINK: Jeremiah 14

BACKGROUND

One of the covenant curses for disobedience was drought (Leviticus 26:18-19; Deuteronomy 28:22-24). The people of Judah had rejected the Living Water of life for false cisterns (2:13) resulting in a spiritual drought. Now, they would experience it physically. The people begged for help from the Hope of Israel (14:8), but He did not answer because their pleas were superficial.

For the third time, God tells Jeremiah not to pray for the people (7:16; 11:14) and vows sword, famine, and plague (Lev. 26:23-26; Rev. 6:8) in direct opposition to what the false prophets had been predicting for Judah.

Jeremiah 14:17-22 give us insight into the heart of this enduring, "weeping prophet" who interceded for Judah by reminding God of His covenant relationship with them, but the people of Judah were not willing to keep their part of the covenant. Consequently, Jeremiah's prayer went unanswered because God could not violate His own Word. Covenant keeping is a two-way street.

No REFECTION or APPLICATION today.

This is a "keep reading" day. Hope you can catch up if you are behind and maybe follow through on applications from previous posts.

PRAYER

Lord, help us to learn that we must worship You in spirit and truth, for You seek these kinds of worshippers. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
