BACKGROUND
This psalm is a “royal psalm” and was used by the Davidic kings. Acts 4:25-26 indicates it was written by David. It may have even been written by him for his own coronation in 1004 B.C.
It is an exhortation for pagan nations to abandon their rebellious plans against the Lord and His Son whom God has ordained to rule. It is part of the Scarlet Thread of Redemption because it speaks of Jesus! (Also, Psalm 2 is in Scenes 4 & 6 of Handel's Messiah.)
In God's perfect timing for this post, I read this verse during my prayer time (personalized in Face to Face: Praying the Scriptures for Intimate Worship):
It is hard for many of us to imagine a physical king because most of us have never been under a king's rule in our own nation. I want you to do a bit of imagining Jesus as your King. Put yourself in the scene of the coronation of Him as King of kings and Lord of lords.
Then, pray for the many peoples of the earth who do not know Jesus as their King remembering the promise in Psalm 2:8.

You, Jesus, will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give You the throne of Your father David, and You will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and Your kingdom will never end. (Luke 1:32-33)REFLECTION/APPLICATION/PRAYER

I just had a reflective time in Handel's Messiah this morning and added links to the parts of Psalm 2 that are in this musical. Stay tuned because in YEAR THREE of the Bible Book Club, we summarize the Bible and the Scarlet Thread of Redemption with a devotional through Handel's Messiah!
